The Gods Of Rap

by Simon Peter Green

Back in 2011 I received a call from a man with a New York accent.

“Hi, my name is Divine. I’m the manager of a New York group and I’m searching for a tour manager. I need someone who is strong and will grow with us, someone who can hold this band down on the road. I heard you are a great tour manager. Is that you Simon? Can you handle this job?”

I said: “Who’s the band?”

Divine said: “They scare most people to death.”

I said: “Who’s the band?”

Divine said: “Wu-Tang Clan.”

I said: “Yes mate.”

That’s how I became the tour and production manager for Wu-Tang Clan, the greatest hip-hop band of all time. Over the next eight years I worked hard to deliver their shows across the world.

I’ve worked for many other incredible artists too, including Pusha T, Duke Dumont, TY, Maya Jane Coles, Kanye West, Jammer BBK, Lethal Bizzle, Andreas Moe, Paigey Cakey, Seravince, William Singe, and Desiigner.

Eventually, I stepped back to catch my breath and follow my dream of becoming a photographer.

Fast forward to May 2019 and Wu-Tang Clan embark on their 36 Chambers 25th Anniversary tour. I travelled to London to see the first show at Wembley arena. Some say 18,000 people were in the audience. Divine was happy to see me. “It’s good that you are here for this historic moment. You are family. Call home and ask if you can come on the tour. You can help on the team and take photos. I will pay expenses and a fee but only if wifey gives you her blessing”.

Wifey gave her blessing and I jumped on the tour.

This was a legendary run across Europe which featured Wu-Tang Clan, Public Enemy, De La Soul and Dj Premier performing at arenas in London, Manchester, Glasgow, Dublin, Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin, Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm, the Sea Star Festival in Croatia, and Helsinki.

It’s a privilege to present this exhibition, a rare backstage view of life on the road with Wu-Tang Clan. My family. The Gods Of Rap. @WuTangClan
